If you have been a victim of a cyber crime, whether it is online fraud, hacking, identity theft, data breach, or social media abuse, here is how you can act:

Step 1- Call the Helpline Immediately:Dial 1930, India's 24×7 national cybercrime helpline. This is especially critical for financial frauds like UPI scams or wallet hacks calling early increases the chances of blocking or reversing the transaction.

Step 2- File Online at the National Portal:Visit www.cybercrime.gov.in, the Government of India's official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. You can file complaints for online financial fraud, hacking, identity theft, ransomware, social media crimes, and cryptocurrency fraud. A complaint can be filed from anywhere in India, regardless of where the crime occurred.

Step 3- File Offline if Needed You can also file a First Information Report (FIR) at your nearest police station or dedicated cyber cell. Cybercrime has no jurisdiction limits, you can report it from anywhere, even if the crime happened in another state.

Step 4- Keep Your Evidence Ready Before filing, gather: screenshots, transaction records, emails, chat logs, and any other digital evidence related to the incident. The more detail you provide, the stronger your case.

Step 5- Track Your Complaint Once submitted, the portal provides a unique complaint reference number which you can use to track the status of your complaint in real time.

Important: If losses exceed ₹10 lakh, your complaint on the portal or 1930 helpline may automatically trigger a Zero FIR registration. Recovery rates improved to 24% in 2025 for cases reported promptly speed matters more than the amount involved.
